The Persian Fallow Deer (Dama dama mesopotamica), known in Farsi as Gavazn-e Zard, is one of the rarest and most beautiful cervids in the world. Once thought to be extinct, its rediscovery in the 1950s in the forests of Khuzestan is one of the most famous success stories in Middle Eastern conservation.
The Story of Resurrection
For decades, the world believed the Persian Fallow Deer had vanished forever. In 1956, a small population was discovered in the remote Dez and Karkheh riverine forests. Since then, Iran has led a rigorous captive breeding and reintroduction program to save the species from the brink of extinction.
Where to See Them in 2025
Because they are “Endangered,” sightings in the wild are rare and usually occur within protected sanctuaries.
Dasht-e Naz Sanctuary (Mazandaran): The primary breeding center. Visitors can see the deer in a lush, semi-wild forested environment near the Caspian Sea.
Arasbaran Protected Area (East Azerbaijan): A stunning mountainous region where the deer have been reintroduced into the wild.
Ashk Island (Lake Urmia): One of the most successful reintroduction sites, though water level fluctuations in the lake are a constant monitoring priority for rangers.
Karkheh National Park (Khuzestan): The ancestral home. Efforts continue here to restore the riverine “Jangal” (jungle) habitat that these deer naturally prefer.
Conservation Status
The Persian Fallow Deer is currently listed as Endangered by the IUCN.
Key Challenges: Habitat fragmentation, competition with livestock, and occasional predation by gray wolves or leopards.
Conservation Success: In 2025, modern tracking technology and “wildlife corridors” are being used to link isolated populations, ensuring genetic diversity—a critical step for their long-term survival.
