Iran’s Protected Areas: A Crucial Sanctuary for Global Biodiversity

Iran’s vast territory, which spans mountain ranges, temperate forests, and arid deserts, has resulted in an exceptional level of biodiversity, leading to the establishment of approximately 200 protected areas. Among these are 16 National Parks, which function as critical sanctuaries for some of the planet’s most incredible and highly endangered species.

The protection of these wild frontiers, encompassing such exceptional varieties of flora and fauna, is paramount. Therefore, while all National Parks of Iran are considered safe to visit, access is strictly regulated. A valid permit is required for entry into any National Park, and visitors are highly encouraged to take a licensed tour leader or ranger. This regulation is crucial not only for the safety of visitors traversing remote terrain but, more importantly, for ensuring the ethical viewing and preservation of the highly sensitive animal populations within these irreplaceable ecological treasures.

Wildlife photography in Iran offers incredible diversity, from the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah in deserts to hyenas, Leopards and unique nomadic cultures, across four seasons, mountains, forests, and the Persian Gulf, but requires extreme caution with local laws, permits, and navigating sensitive areas, often best done with experienced local guides for both safety and access to remote spots like Dasht-e Lut or Zagros Mountains.
