Hormod Protected Area is one of Iran’s most ecologically significant desert landscapes. Spanning 209,671 hectares across the border of Fars and Hormozgan provinces, this region has been under strict environmental protection since 1974. With its dramatic elevation shifts—ranging from 200 to 2,660 meters—Hormod offers a stunning transition from sun-drenched plains to temperate mountain peaks.

Climate and Hydrology

Hormod is characterized by a warm extra-arid and temperate arid climate.

  • Annual Precipitation: 130 mm

  • Mean Temperature: 25°C The area’s lifeblood consists of the Aliabad, Avin, and Dendel rivers, which serve as the primary water supplies for the region’s resilient flora and fauna.

Rare Wildlife & Fauna

Hormod is internationally recognized as the premier habitat for the Larestan wild sheep (Ovis orientalis laristanica), one of the rarest wild sheep in the world. The area is a biodiversity hotspot featuring:

  • Mammals: Jebeer gazelle, wild goat, Persian leopard, wolf, wild boar, jackal, and the Indian crested porcupine.

  • Birds: Houbara bustard, sandgrouse, turtle dove, and swifts.

  • Reptiles: A diverse range of snakes, including the saw-scaled viper, horned viper, and the steppe ribbon snake.

Flora and Vegetation

The botanical diversity of Hormod reflects its varying altitudes:

  • Highlands: Mountainous zones are home to juniper forests, Turk terebinth pistachio, wild almond, and olive trees.

  • Plains: The vast lowlands are covered with acacia, nubk trees (Sidr), musquit beans, astragal, poppy mallow, and wormwood.

Ecotourism and Tourism Highlights

For nature enthusiasts and hikers, Hormod offers breathtaking scenery. The combination of high mountain ridges, hidden valleys, and vast plains becomes particularly enchanting in the spring.
