Located in the heart of Kerman Province, the Bidoyeh Protected Area is a vast wilderness spanning 160,534 hectares. Established in 1996, this region is a vital sanctuary within the Irano-Turanian ecological zone, offering a unique blend of mountainous terrain and expansive salt plains.
Geography and Climate
Bidoyeh is characterized by its dramatic landscape, featuring the Kalleh Gavi Mountains, Kuh-e Syah, and the Bidiyeh and Kabootarkhan salt plains.
Elevation: Ranges from 1,660 to 2,740 meters above sea level.
Climate: The region experiences a temperate extra-arid climate, with an average annual temperature of 14°C and minimal rainfall (approx. 50 mm).
Access: The area is highly accessible due to its proximity to regional road networks, though visitors should be mindful of nearby military zones.
Rare Wildlife and Habitats
Bidoyeh is recognized as a critically valuable habitat, particularly for the Goitred Gazelle. It serves as a bridge for several of Iran’s most endangered species.
Flagship Species: The Asiatic Cheetah, wild goat, and wild sheep.
Avifauna: Birdwatchers can find the Houbara bustard and gray partridge.
Reptiles: The region is home to the saw-scaled viper, versicolored wood snake, slender racer, and various agama species.
Flora and Vegetation
Despite its arid nature, Bidoyeh boasts a rich variety of “indicator species” that define the Iranian desert landscape:
