Spanning a massive 398,853 hectares across the Tehran and Mazandaran provinces, the Central Alborz (Alborz-e Markazi) Protected Area is one of Iran’s oldest and most ecologically diverse sanctuaries. Designated in 1967, it protects a vast range of biomes, stretching from the humid shores of the Caspian Sea to the soaring heights of the Alborz Mountains.

Geography and Dual Climates

The region is unique for its “dual slope” geography, creating a dramatic climatic contrast:

  • The Northern Slope: A temperate, per-humid zone characterized by heavy rainfall (up to 1,100 mm) and lush greenery.

  • The Southern Slope: A transition into temperate semi-arid and Mediterranean climates, offering clear skies and rugged trekking terrain.

  • Altitude Extremes: Elevations range from -10 meters (near the Caspian coast) to a staggering 4,300 meters, creating a vertical mosaic of life.

Flora: From Ancient Jungles to Alpine Meadows

With over 1,100 identified plant species, the area is a botanical treasure trove:

  • The Hyrcanian Forests: Dense stands of Beech, Hornbeam, Chestnut-leaved Oak, and the rare Ironwood.

  • The Chaloos Cypress Reserve: A 1,592-hectare ancient Cypress forest near Chaloos, serving as a unique relic of coniferous history in the region.

  • Medicinal and Rare Plants: High-altitude flora including Juniper, Borage and endemic species like Centaurea elbursensis.

Wildlife: A Sanctuary for Apex Predators

The park supports 264 animal species, making it a premier destination for wildlife observation:

  • Large Mammals: Red Deer (Maral), Roe Deer, Brown Bear, and the Persian Leopard.

  • Mountain Specialists: Alborz Red Sheep, Wild Goat, and the Eurasian Lynx.

  • Avifauna: Pheasants in the forests and the rare Caspian Snowcock in the rocky heights, alongside various birds of prey and warblers.

  • Aquatic Life: The high-flow rivers and the Amirkabir Dam Lake host Trout, Carp, and the Southern Caspian Kutum.

Tourism, Research, and Accessibility

Alborz-e Markazi is more than a nature reserve; it is a hub for high-altitude adventure and scientific inquiry:

  • Activities: Mountaineering, professional birdwatching, and freshwater fishing.

  • Key Landmarks: The Amirkabir (Karaj) Dam, historical monuments, and snow-clad summits.

  • Logistics: Its proximity to Tehran and the scenic Chaloos Road provides excellent access for day-trips or deep-wilderness expeditions.
