Belgian Crane Suffers from Lung Infection

According to the Mehrnews, Rouhollah Esmaeili announced the continuation of specialized treatment for “Roya” at one of the veterinary centers, stating that the bird was placed under specialized examinations and medical care after showing signs of anorexia and balance disorders. Esmaeili noted that following the caretaker’s report regarding the bird’s decreased appetite and balance issues, veterinary examinations were conducted, and initial treatments and emergency supportive measures were initiated due to the suspected presence of a respiratory infection.

He added that with the persistence of clinical symptoms and the need for more detailed investigations, “Roya” was referred to a specialized veterinary center on Saturday, where the results of specialized tests and imaging confirmed the presence of progressive lung infection. The Deputy of Natural Environment and Biodiversity at the Mazandaran Department of Environment Protection stated that, according to veterinarians, the disease’s progression prior to the appearance of visible symptoms had caused damage to the bird’s respiratory system. He emphasized that in birds, respiratory diseases often remain asymptomatic until advanced stages, and therefore, once symptoms appear, the progression of the disease can be very rapid.

Esmaeili continued, stating that “Roya’s” overall condition, including breathing quality, alertness level, balance, nutrition, and response to treatment, is continuously monitored by veterinarians and caretakers. Simultaneously, supportive measures are being implemented to provide a calm and safe environment to expedite the treatment process. He highlighted that medical treatment and supportive care are ongoing according to the treatment team’s recommendations, and all specialized resources are being utilized to improve the condition of this Siberian crane.

Esmaeili, referencing the progressive nature of the lung infection, added that due to the damage inflicted on the respiratory system, the prognosis of the disease is cautious, and under the current circumstances, it is not possible to definitively comment on the final outcome of the treatment. He emphasized that additional information regarding the status of this bird will be communicated after receiving documented and verified veterinary results.

“Roya” is a captive-bred crane that was transferred to Mazandaran in the winter of 2022 to accompany “Omid,” the last migratory Siberian crane that visited Iran each year. However, after the migration began, it was unable to continue its journey and was returned to the Ojakale Wildlife Sanctuary in Fereydunkenar, where it has been under care and supervision ever since.
