Lavandevil

This region was designated protected area in 1973 and wildlife refuge in 1975. It is a 1074 ha area of wetlands and plain forests located in the most western side of the Hyrcanian forests in Gilan Province. Lavandevil is located 20 m below open sea level. It has a temperate per-humid climate with mean annual precipitation and temperature 1100 mm and 15 C, respectively. Around one-third of the area is covered with ponds and wooded wetlands.

Lavandevil is a unique remainder of Hyrcanian plain forests. The main plant species include European alder, Caucasian wingnut, honey locust, pomegranate, medlar tree, reed, cat’s tail, wheat grass, elder and raspberry. A number of terrestrial and aquatic habitats have been developed in the region. 125 animal species have been identified in the region including common fox, wild boar, Indian crested porcupine, otter, jackal, marten, badger, Caspian seal, mute swan, whooper swan, pintail, tufted duck, golden eye duck, great cormorant, pygmy cormorant, sandpiper, slender-billed curlew, golden oriole, crane, owl, different herons, eagles, gulls, finches, tits, buzzards, terns, Caspian pond turtle and European pond turtle as most important ones. Lavandevil wildlife refuge is a superb is a habitat for pheasants. Preferable biodiversity and proper access roads have facilitated scientific and research activities in the region.
