Chukar Partridge

Chukar Partridge

The Chukar Partridge (Alectoris chukar) is one of the most common and recognizable upland gamebirds in Iran, thriving across its vast, rugged, and semi-arid landscapes. Known locally by the Persian name “Kabk”, this adaptable bird is an iconic sight and sound of the Iranian mountains.

Distribution and Habitat

The Chukar Partridge is widely distributed across Iran, typically found in areas that offer a combination of rocky slopes, scattered vegetation, and access to water.

  • Geographic Range: The species is found across the mountain ranges of Iran, including the Alborz and Zagros mountains, and extends into the eastern and southwestern regions.

  • Key Habitats: They prefer dry, rocky open hillsides, scrubland, and sparsely vegetated slopes. Their exceptional camouflage allows them to blend seamlessly into the arid, stony terrain.

  • Altitude: Chukars are incredibly hardy, inhabiting a wide elevational range, often seen at altitudes from low plains up to the higher mountain valleys.

Iran hosts several recognized subspecies of the Chukar Partridge, reflecting the geographical diversity of the country, including A. c. kurdestanica (Northwest Iran), A. c. werae (Southwest Iran), and A. c. koroviakovi (Eastern Iran).

Conservation Status and Threats

  • IUCN Status: Globally, the Chukar Partridge is listed as Least Concern (LC) due to its extensive range and stable overall population trend.

  • Status in Iran: While generally widespread and common, local populations in Iran can face pressures, particularly in more accessible regions.

  • Main Threats:

    • Overhunting and Poaching: As a popular upland game bird (a traditional quarry for hunters), illegal hunting and capture for the pet trade can locally impact populations.

    • Habitat Degradation: Overgrazing by domestic livestock and unsustainable land use practices in mountainous areas can diminish the quality of their crucial nesting and feeding grounds.

Current Research in Iran

Iranian scientists are actively engaged in studying Chukar Partridge genetics and population dynamics. Research, often utilizing non-invasive methods like feather sampling, focuses on assessing genetic diversity and gene flow across different populations to ensure the health and long-term viability of the subspecies within the country.
